“Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”
Darshaun and Stephanie McAway are two parents who dream big for their family and legacy. Their little precious daughter Anaiah is working her way through each day with new discoveries as she makes milestones and each day she’s seeing more of her part in such an amazing story. When I originally heard that there would soon be a book creatively formed by parents in tribute of their new child, I had to instantly reserve my copy! Not only was this for support, but so my daughter could also see a little Black girl like her as a feature, a lead character in a story and envision herself along in the journey. I want my daughter to grow up proud of her features, skin color, hair and beauty as a Black girl. I want her to take pride in her Blackness, in her heritage. What a great way to build a legacy for your child and build up the confidence in others. However, these books are for any parents and child, that’s the awesome thing about it. Everyone can find little characters that reflect their life. It’s definitely an exciting time to be parents, babies and entrepreneurs thanks to the McAways! In one of their first interviews since the launch of their book, creators of ‘Anaiah’s Trip to the Rainbow!’ and BabyAuthors, open up about what inspired this amazing reading movement!
Could you please tell us about Baby Authors and how it came to be?
Baby Authors is an animation and publishing company that gives parents the ability to publish content on a commercial or personal platform. It came to be when my wife was pregnant and we decided to record audio versions of stories we created after we found out the sex of the baby. We thought it would be a great idea if the baby could actually see herself in a book to help strengthen her imagination to achieve whatever she wants to do in life.
Why do you think it’s important to start investing into your child’s legacy at a young age?
Well for us it had everything to do with starting a business that we all could do together that comes naturally. We realize that children grow up extremely fast and want to be independent, so we wanted to capitalize on all the precious moments and leave behind a company that she could be proud of and have stability in the future.

How did you choose ‘Anaiah’s Trip to the Rainbow!’ as your daughter’s first book?
It was a tough decision at first because we had a book for every month she got older. Therefore, we decided to start off with the subject of being happy and also the pursuit of chasing after something that you think will make you happy. So it was critical for us to express throughout the book to be happy with who you are and where you are in the exact moment.
What do you hope to accomplish with this initial baby author book and books in the future?
Our mission is to honestly have the world take a step back and really enjoy the process of seeing your child develop and grow into the best person they can be. We feel like millions of parents miss out on being able to write a precious story about their child in the infancy stages. So we want to be the company to help you develop the best children’s book for your child.

One of the special qualities of personalized children’s books is that they repeat the child’s name over and over again throughout the story. When children hear their own name spoken aloud, it can instantly pull them into the moment and into the story. When children feel they are personally part of a book, they tend to become more interested in the journey and outcome of the story.
How has this project impacted your family?
This moment blessed my soul. The gentleman in the grey blazer is one of the VPs of WalMart; James Cameron. I met him one month ago and he came through on his word by setting up a meeting with the book buyer. However, we did not get the deal with WalMart. He came over after the meeting to encourage us to continue my efforts of success. It’s been extremely fun to start a business and still have time to spend with your family throughout the day. We do our best to do everything with our daughter so we can never look back and say “we wish we did that”.
